A Retrospective about the light art pioneer François Morellet (1926-2016)
Morellet inspired an art genre that uses light as its primary material and where neon tubes are becoming means of expression. A seemingly emotionless rationality of constructivist lattice design repeats in his works.
“Neon keeps me exceedingly busy. It’s a hard and cold material that I like, and which makes it possible to work with elements like time and rhythm. – I love the strictness of geometry, but I love to ignore all strictness even more.” Morellet explained in 1977 and 1988.
