REFLEXION – In Sync / Out of Sync

“Light allows me to embody imagination by projecting a mental image that due to its immaterial character cannot be displayed by any other material, since only light can give form to the intangible. In the interactive light and sound installation REFLEXION – In Sync / Out of Sync – two visitors are invited to sit close to each other surrounded by a light structure made of electroluminescent wires to pursue the synchronisation of their heartbeats, which are measured via finger pulse sensors to steer sound and light of the art work. When the frequencies of their heartbeats diverge, the installation responds in an Out of Sync state and the sound becomes dissonant; however, when they are close to synchronisation or fully synchronised, the installation reacts in an In of Sync state, with agreeable and non-dissonant sound in the immersive soundscape. Thus, the installation explores connecting sound, light, colour, and architecture with a further element: the interaction between individuals with their own emotional and physiological reactions which has a direct impact on the sound and light of the installation: light makes visible not only subtle variations in the inner body but also the ‘invisible’ happening between human beings; visitors are therefore invited to be mindful of their surroundings consisting of fellow human beings and the space itself, including its sound. The main concept of the work is based on research showing that our heartbeats can be synchronised by deepening our perception of others. The installation is therefore an invitation to feel empathy to the other person and, extensively to ‘others’, whereby sound and light structures are created according to the architectural properties of each particular space. The electroluminescent chasing wires provide a continuous movement of light, the frequency of which is amplified or reduced in accordance with the heartbeats of the participants.

My work can therefore be considered a call for awareness about ourselves and also about our environment, forcing our senses to see, hear and feel beyond of our normal daily perception both our inner and our surroundings, namely imperceptible internal signs of the human body as well as our surrounding.” Claudia Robles-Angel
